Bloodlines, The Light of the New World #1, 03/23/20

Bloodlines is the first installment to my The Light of the New World fantasy series. Here, we embark on a journey with Trevor, Sarah, Alric, Francis, and Quiver, five characters that find themselves wrapped up in the sudden onslaught of violence and suffering.

Make no mistake, this is an adult fantasy novel that ties some "grimdark" elements with a traditional fantasy genre. There is plenty of bloodshed, cursing, tragedy, and scenes that will bring some readers a sense of melancholy. However, there isn't an overwhelming amount, which is what typically turns readers away from good books. Aside from those grim feels, there is also adventure, a new sense of magic, a complex plot, and humor.

Bloodlines has been described as a slower-paced novel, where characterization and dialogue are threads that connect what came before and what comes next. Eventually, these threads will take root and drive the plot forward until it concludes, at which point you'll be slapping your forehead and going, "Wait, WHAT!?" It's written in a way to keep readers in the dark until they're ready to understand what's actually happening.

Though there comes a time when we encounter a lot of characters along this journey, it is not hard to distinguish one from the other. Characters were a main focus when writing Bloodlines, and each individual one seems distinctive with their own flaws and background. Each are driven by their own reasoning, pained by their own history, and displayed through their own actions.
